If Tarlabaşı was a princess, to where this princess wandered, where did she live, who were her mother, her father, her friends and her lovers, why was she empoisoned, how is the treatment process… The artist will investigate through the “present state” of the streets, the memory of the district, and based on the district, of the city itself and its transformation; while being in search of the variation between what has been tried to be effaced and what currently stands as reality.
Istanbul, the city I have moved to for my University studies, became the place where I have founded my life. I have become the person that I am over the past 12 years, through a mutual engraving with this city.
Yet today, the soil that made me is slipping under my feet – most of it already gone. Whomever is left, is only as much as a person could be, without that soil.
My heart does not let me say ‘Punk is dead’; yet it lives in the attitude of some foul-mouthed women and some lubunyas*.
the transwomen are in the corners of Tarlabaşı, who would ensure that I do not fear from the darkness of the night and men’s violence,
houses that once hosted a communal life are now boutique hotels.
*Terminologically, “lubunya” is a Turkish that refers to both transwomen and gays; today, it stands as an umbrella for lgbti.
